Exodus 90

L

Looking for a way to grow in holiness this New Year?

“The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness!” – Pope Benedict XVI

We weren’t created to be comfortable and cozy and in control in this life – we were created to be on fire for Jesus Christ and to live a life of self-giving for God and neighbor.

Knowing this to be true I want to extend an invitation to all of our parishioners (we will have both men’s and women’s groups this year) to consider the Exodus 90 program this new year. The program will begin on January 13 and end on April 12th, which is Easter .

Exodus 90 has been around for a few years after it was developed at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg as a way to help seminarians to find the kind of freedom they needed to be able to pursue vocation to the priesthood, now it is offered to all Catholic men (and women).
Essentially it is 90 days of prayer, fasting, and fraternity – and its pretty heavy on the fasting or penance part. Now it is specifically designed for men – however last year when we ran this we had a lot of women who were interested as well, so we’ll offer groups for women this year.

The 90 days would start Jan 13 and run through Easter. So it’s like a long lent – twice as long.

WHAT WILL YOU BECOME BY DAY 91?

It Involves a Little Extra Prayer

Daily readings and reflections from the book of Exodus get us in the habit of engaging scripture. A minimum of 20 minutes of silent mental prayer helps make space to hear the Lord speak daily.

It Has an Important Group Component as Well

Meeting once a week – they provide a format for the meeting, prayer and conversation. Meetings are only a half-hour to an hour.

And Then There is Some Fasting & Penance

The Ascetic Practices for Exodus 90:
  • Take short, cold showers
  • Practice regular, intense exercise
  • Get a full night’s sleep (at least seven hours is recommended)
  • Abstain from alcohol
  • Abstain from desserts and sweets
  • Abstain from eating between meals
  • Abstain from soda or sweet drinks (white milk and unsweetened tea are permissible)
  • Abstain from television, movies, or televised sports
  • Abstain from video games
  • Abstain from nonessential material purchases
  • Only listen to music that lifts the soul to God
  • Only use the computer for work, school, or essential tasks (e.g., paying bills)
  • Only use mobile devices for essential communications; nonessential texting, app, and internet use is prohibited
  • Practice fasting days: Wednesdays and Fridays (abstain from meat and only eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal)
Groups and individuals can decide for themselves if they want to modify any of the ascetical practices to make it workable for them.

If you are interested in participating this year, we will have a meeting for men on Saturday January 11th at 7:30am in Camerman Hall.
And for women Saturday, January, 11th at 10am in Camerman Hall.
