SUMMARY:Stations of the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Join us Fridays during Lent for Stations of the Cross at 5:30PM in the Church.\nThe Knights of Columbus will host a Fish Fry in Camerman Hall (church basement) following the stations. \n\nThe Stations of the Cross began as a practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Christ to Calvary. Later\, for the many who couldn’t make the trip to Jerusalem\, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in most Catholic churches.\nOur Lady Star of the Sea uses the prayers and meditations from St. Alphonsus Liguori’s “The Way of the Cross”.

SUMMARY:The Jesus Prayer-A Pathway to Trauma Recovery
DESCRIPTION:The Jesus Prayer – A Pathway to Trauma Recovery\nPresented by Gabriel Crawford\, LMHC \nMARCH 15 from 10:30am – Noon\nStar of the Sea School Gym \nIf Jesus promised that he has come to give life in its fullness (Jn. 10:10)\, then why do so many Catholics feel like they are not flourishing?\nHave you ever intimately examined your life story\, considering the impact of past heartache upon your body\, soul\, and spirit today? \nThis workshop presents trauma by connecting Polyvagal Theory to Catholic spirituality and explores how the practice of the Jesus Prayer can reconnect us to our body and to the love of the Father through the Son and in the Spirit. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing\, because there will be movement in this workshop (not yoga).  \n

SUMMARY:Simbang Gabi
DESCRIPTION:Mass is at 6:00 PM followed by a reception in Camerman Hall. All are welcome!\n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Commissioning Mass at St. James Cathedral\nSaturday\, December  14\, 2024 @ 11AM\nJoin Catholics across the archdiocese for the Archdiocese of Seattle’s 27th Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass to be presided by Archbishop Paul Etienne.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is Simbang Gabi?\n\nSimbáng Gabi (Filipino for “Night Mass”) is a devotional Novena of Masses in anticipation of Christmas and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Traditionally the masses are held daily from December 16–24\, and occur at different times\, even as early as 4:00am! It is a time of great celebration; singing of native carols\, adorning your homes with colorful lanterns/decorations\, and feasting.   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The original Simbang Gabi was called the “Misa de Aurea” (Golden Mass) or the “Angel’s Mass.” In 1587\, Fray Diego Soria\, prior of the San Augustin Convent\, petitioned the Pope for permission to hold Christmastide Masses outdoors because the church could not accommodate the multitude that attended the services. The request was granted through a rescript and in the 17th Century\, the Misa de Aguinaldo or the Misa de Gallo\, or Simbang Gabi became a Filipino spiritual tradition. Vatican II encouraged the church in the Philippines to continue the tradition and uphold its significant role in the life of the people. \nFilipino Americans brought Simbang Gabi to the United States and found it to be an effective way to stay connected to their faith. It expresses who they are as a Filipino people\, and enables them to share their God-given gifts with the wider Church in the United States. Simbang Gabi draws on the leadership of the Filipino Catholics in the parishes to carry out these special gatherings and to share their religious tradition and culture with the whole parish family. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THE PAROL\n \nA Parol is a star-shaped lantern displayed in homes in the Philippines\, meant to serve as a guiding light and sign for Mary and Joseph and more importantly\, Jesus\, to come into the home\, as the family is ready for them. It is also used as a part of the processional entrance for Mass to remind us that Jesusis the Light of the World bringing life and light to all who accept Him. \nThe presence of the star reminds us of God’s presence among us and that Jesus is Emmanuel!

SUMMARY:Advent Mission
DESCRIPTION:Divine Mercy in the Gospels\nDecember 9-12\, 2024With Fr. Ben Cameron\, C.P.M. \nFr. Ben Cameron was born in Kokomo\, Indiana\, and grew up as a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in that city.  During his junior high and high school years\, he attended a small Christian school that was operated by a local Baptist church.  It was in that non-Catholic environment\, where his faith was often challenged\, that he began to study the Catholic Faith.  Fr. Ben is a 1991 graduate of Christendom College\, a small Catholic liberal arts college in Front Royal\, Virginia\, where he became involved in the Legion of Mary\, which awakened his desire to share his Catholic Faith with others.  Upon receiving his degree in Political Science and History\, Fr. Ben planned a career in the political arena\, but soon found that God had other plans.  He joined the Fathers of Mercy in 1992\, studied theology at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell\, Connecticut\, and was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on May 31\, 1997.  Fr. Ben has served as Vocation Director\, Treasurer\, Mission Director and Assistant General of the Fathers of Mercy during his priesthood.  He has served as a full-time parish mission preacher and retreat master (2000-2018)\, and as pastor of St. Helen’s Parish\, Glasgow\, Kentucky\, and its mission church\, Our Lady of the Caves in Horse Cave\, Kentucky (2018-2022).  He is once again serving as a full-time parish mission preacher and retreat master. \n  \n The Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy was founded in 1808\, originally under the title of the “Missionaries of France.”  The community was founded for the purpose of re-evangelizing the French people after the Catholic Faith had been subjected to years of attacks and persecution during the French Revolution.  It is now an exclusively American community.  The Generalate of the community is located a few miles outside of Bowling Green\, Kentucky.  The primary apostolate of the Fathers of Mercy is to conduct parish missions and retreats\, which are now given throughout the United States\, Canada and Australia. \n  \n During the mission\, Fr. Ben will encourage and challenge the parish community to make a stronger\, deeper personal commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church.  His topic that he will speak on during this mission is the Infinite Mercy of God\, and how we can live the Divine Mercy devotion more deeply through understanding its roots in the Gospels. \n

SUMMARY:Rorate Caeli Mass
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 7 @ 6:30 AMfollowed by a brunch reception in Camerman Hall\nABOUT THE MASS: \nThe Rorate Caeli Mass is a traditional Advent devotion where the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary for Advent is offered just before dawn. The interplay of light and darkness speak to the meaning of Advent and the coming of the Light of the world. \nThe Mass takes its title\, Rorate Caeli\, from the first words of the Introit\, from Isaiah 45:8 \n\n    Rorate\, caeli\, desuper\, et nubes pluant justum\,     aperiatur terra\, et germinet Salvatorem. \n  \n     Drop down dew\, ye heavens\, from above\, and let      the clouds rain the just: let earth be opened and bud     forth a Savior. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Rorate Mass is lit only by candlelight. In the dimly lit setting\, priests and faithful prepare to honor the Light of the world\, who is soon to be born\, and offer praise to God for the gift of Our Lady. As the Mass proceeds and sunrise approaches\, the church becomes progressively brighter\, illumined by the sun as our Faith is illumined by Christ. \nThe readings and prayers of the Mass foretell the prophecy of the Virgin who would bear a Son called Emmanuel\, and call on all to raise the gates of their hearts and their societies to let Christ the King enter; asking for the grace to receive eternal life by the merits of the Incarnation and saving Resurrection of Our Lord.
