The First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is based on a promise made by Our Lord Jesus Christ during an Apparition to St. Margaret Mary. This promise was implicitly approved by the Church in the 1920 canonization of St. Margaret Mary. The promise reads:
I promise you in the excessive Mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful Love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the Grace of Final Penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.
At Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, First Friday devotions begin with morning Mass at 9 AM, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament all day. All are invited to spend an hour with Jesus in private prayer.
During the school year, from 6 to 6:30 PM, there is a Children's Adoration time and Benediction followed by social time in Cameron Hall. At 7 PM the faithful gather for Evening Prayer [Vespers] followed by Benediction and confessions until all are heard. Exposition continues through the night and ends with 9 AM Mass on Saturday morning. Parishioners keep vigil through the night.
